“QR coded emergency medical care card (emc2)”

When a member of public travels alone and becomes unconscious unfortunately, due to an accident or any pre-existing diseases, details of the immediate contact person and his/her medical information which can help initiating emergency medical treatment, are unavailable in any of the cards like voter id, aadhaar card, ration card, driving license, credit or debit cards and mobile phones (usually screen locked).

This novel of its kind project addressing this issue of lack of availability of this basic life saving facility and contact details of the member of the public, if found unconscious on roads.

This initiative is the need of the hour because without such information many faceless and nameless dead bodies are presently kept in mortuaries of hospitals in Delhi and other cities for several days. (Refer Indian Express dated 25thApril, 2016)

This unique card named emc2, the size of any credit card, contains medical information in QR format and personal demographics of the card holder. This will enable to contact immediate family member and starting the golden zero hour medical treatment, with the help of the contents of the card, in case of medical emergency.

Scanning the QR code in the card enables treating physicians to initiate life saving zero hour medical care protocols, obviating the need for repeating diagnostic tests with the resultant delay in initiating treatment. Without this information, the treating medical officer will be forced to order for a battery of medical tests to identify the pre-existing medical condition of the unconscious victim, thereby leading to loss of valuable golden hour of treatment.

On scanning the QR Code, the embedded code reader links to the database server containing all the health data of the individual, thereby enabling immediate retrieval of the card holder’s data.

Dr. T.S. Chandrasekar, MedIndia Hospitals & Charitable Trust, Chennai have conceptualized just completed a Pilot project by distributing 491 Emc2 cards Free of Cost to the general public.
